A pallet of flowers flown from Nairobi to Amsterdam emits about 1.6 tonnes of CO₂e. By sea it would be about a twentieth of that, but the flowers would be compost.
Where switching works
For avocados, apples and frozen food, ocean is almost always the better choice. For flowers and fresh fish, the answer is to fill the aircraft and pre-cool well.
